Composer makes rooftop music at Kaleido Vivian Fung premieres Humanoid on Alberta Avenue
California-based composer Vivian Fung is known for weaving disparate influences into her music. But her latest project, Humanoid, represents her first major piece for electronics, bringing a cellist in dialogue with pre-recorded machine sounds for a 13-minute performance.
“I’m trying to stretch the boundary of what is possible with a single cello,” Fung said. “How many ways can you have an interaction between machine and cellist? You’d think that after 12 years of running Kaleido Family Arts Festival, organizers would run out of new ideas, but happily there are plenty of new features to experience from Sept 15-17.

Another strength is the community focus. Artistic director Christy Morin explained the heart of Kaleido has always been local talent, including organizers, performers, athletes, and artisans.
