Parents from other Catholic schools have stepped in to help St. Alphonsus Catholic School undertake fundraising for a new playground.
Due to zoning regulations, land use, and funding allocation, there isn’t enough money to build a playground, and the school can’t access city funds. The school hasn’t had a parent council for over 10 years, which has impacted the ability to fundraise. Many parents don’t have the time or energy to join or create a parent council as they work two or three jobs. Terry Protz is a lifelong resident of Norwood. Walking with me along Norwood Boulevard east of Norwood School, Protz provided fascinating details on local history.
Today these city blocks are victims of urban blight. “It used to be a good neighbourhood,” said Protz.
Norwood Boulevard was a lively mixed use area during the Second World War and the years following the war. This working class district contained several businesses, a church, and modest homes.
Learning lessons in community decision making Norwood Grade 3 students participate in Norwood Square Park project
Two Norwood School Grade 3 classes worked with Rocky Pilisko, one of the city’s community recreation coordinators, in a project aimed at redeveloping Norwood Square Park. The students shared what they learned about the decision-making process used to make changes within a community park.
