A budget-friendly guide to winterizing your home

Victoria Stevens December 6, 2023

Winter is just around the corner, and while it brings cozy evenings by the fire and hot cocoa, it also means higher heating bills and the need to keep your home warm. If you’re on a tight budget, the prospect of winterizing your home might seem daunting, but fear not! With a little effort and creativity, you can effectively prepare your home for the colder months without breaking the bank.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through practical, budget-friendly tips to winterize your home and save on energy costs.

Seal drafts

This is one of the most cost-effective ways to keep your home warm in winter. You can use weatherstripping, caulk, or even DIY solutions like rolled-up towels to cover gaps around doors and windows. These simple measures can prevent cold air from infiltrating your home and warm air from escaping, reducing your heating bills significantly.

Insulate your windows

If you can’t afford to replace your windows with double-glazed ones, consider using inexpensive window insulation kits. These kits include clear plastic film that you attach to the window frame using double-sided tape and then shrink with a hairdryer. This creates an additional barrier against drafts and heat loss. For some windows you might even benefit from reusing some old bubble wrap under the plastic to create an additional layer of insulation. For older windows that might not close fully, consider adding a final seal with some clear packing tape.

Use door draft stoppers

Draft stoppers are affordable and effective at keeping cold air out. You can purchase them, or create your own by filling a tube sock with rice or beans and placing it along the base of the door. Alternatively, just roll up an old bed sheet or towel and tie it using twine or zip ties.

Curtains and blinds

Curtains and blinds play a significant role in maintaining a warm indoor environment. Keep them closed at night to trap warm air inside, and open them during the day to let sunlight naturally heat your home. If you don’t have curtains, consider repurposing old bed sheets or using blankets to cover windows.

Cover hardwood floors

If your home has hardwood floors, they can be quite chilly in winter. Consider investing in some affordable area rugs to cover the floors. Not only will this help insulate your home, but it’ll also add a touch of coziness to your living spaces.

Reverse ceiling fans

Most ceiling fans have a reverse function. In winter, set your fans to spin clockwise at a low speed. This pushes warm air down from the ceiling, making your rooms feel warmer without adjusting the thermostat.

Furnace maintenance

Regular maintenance of your heating system is crucial for efficient and cost-effective heating. Change your furnace filter regularly, clean the vents, and consider having a professional check your furnace for any issues to ensure it’s running at its best.

Lower the thermostat

Reducing your thermostat by a few degrees can have a significant impact on your energy bills. Wear warm clothing, use blankets, and take advantage of cozy winter accessories to keep warm.

Winterizing your home on a tight budget is all about being resourceful and making the most of what you have. With these cost-effective tips, you can keep your home warm, reduce energy consumption and save money during the winter months. Remember that small changes can make a big difference, ensuring you have a cozy and affordable winter.
